Paraquat or Diquat Work
Paraquat or Diquat Work
Health Hazards
Diquat
Acute:
Has skin irritant properties and may be absorbed through the skin, though its effects have not been well documented.
Inhalation causes upper respiratory tract irritation.
Irritates the eyes, and prolonged contact may lead to conjunctivitis.
Exposure to high concentrations can be fatal.
Chronic:
Animal studies have shown mutagenic and teratogenic effects, but carcinogenicity in humans has not been confirmed.
Paraquat
Acute:
Irritates the eyes, nose, throat, and skin.
May cause nosebleeds and nail abnormalities, including nail loss.
Ingestion causes burns to the mouth and throat, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and damage to the heart, kidneys, and lungs, as well as jaundice and liver damage.
Skin and Eyes: May cause rashes on the scrotum and between the buttocks, brittle nails, and corneal ulcers and scabbing.
Chronic: May cause skin cancer. Some studies have also shown a link to Parkinson's disease.
Suggestions:
Level 1 Management: No specific regulations.
Level 2-4 Management:
Consider health conditions unsuitable for this type of work, such as contact dermatitis, skin keratosis, dark spots, or suspected skin cancer lesions.
