Health Hazards

Acute:
Inhalation: The most likely route of exposure. Exposure to 500 to 1,000 ppm can cause severe emotional and personality disturbances, including agitation, confusion, uncontrollable anger, nightmares, insomnia, psychosis, and suicidal thoughts; exposure to 4,800 ppm for 30 minutes can cause unconsciousness and may be fatal.
Skin: Can be absorbed through the skin, with symptoms similar to inhalation; it dissolves skin oils, possibly causing scaly skin and blistering; absorption near nerves can cause nerve damage.
Eyes: Splashes to the eyes can immediately cause severe irritation. High vapor concentrations can also irritate the eyes.
Ingestion: Small amounts can cause vomiting, dysentery, and headaches; large amounts can lead to convulsions and unconsciousness. It has also been reported that ingestion of 1 gram can be fatal.

Chronic:
Long-term exposure can cause diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys, endocrine system, and eyes.
Central Nervous System: Initially unstable, excitable, and loss of personality, evolving into depression, anxiety, paranoia, sometimes leading to suicide, with symptoms like nightmares, apathy, and headaches; continued exposure can lead to a Parkinson's-like disease.
Peripheral Nervous System: May cause paralysis or tinnitus, muscle weakness, muscle pain, and loss of sensation in extremities.
Cardiovascular Effects: Similar to arteriosclerosis due to aging, occurring in the arteries of the head and kidneys, and increasing the risk of coronary artery disease.
Gastrointestinal Effects: Increases the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and dysfunction of the liver and bile ducts.
Eyes: Structural and functional changes and vascular damage.
Reproductive System Dysfunction.
